A critic of The Times, wrote: "Like a modernist painter who makes his core statement with the near proverbial black square, Ms. De Keersmaeker has felt the need to move on while still remaining true to herself. 'Fase,' completed in 1982, established her Minimalist esthetic. Her choreography used repetitive, reductive movement, but unlike cool American Minimalists, she expressed strong emotions through her rigorous structures. Above all, form generated meaning in her work."
